Swans will surprise in 2010 Mumford

<br /> Swans will surprise in 2010: Mumford<br />

Shane Mumford says the Swans will “surprise a lot of teams this year”,, with a new-look side that includes six new players ready to take on St Kilda on Saturday.

“I think were going to surprise a lot of teams this year. I think were an underrated side, and I think were going to come out this year and have a really big impact, football in new york,” he said on Friday.

Mumford and housemate Lewis Jetta will both make their debut in the red and white guernsey as they run out against the Saints at ANZ Stadium. Mumford urged the Swans faithful to turn out in force to support their teams newest recruits.

“Im really excited,, cant wait to get out there and amongst the new boys. A couple of us are making our debut for Sydney this weekend, so itll be great to see as many fans out there to see us as possible.”

In the event of a win, the red and white army might also need to sing the Club song a little louder than usual, with Mumford admitting many of the new players might not be up to scratch when it comes to the lyrics.

“I didnt know the song at first! But it was sent out in the membership packs, so I pretty quickly read through it and Ive got it down-pat now. There are a lot of new blokes playing though, so there could be a few standing around miming it!” Mumford joked.

The Sydney Swans clash with St Kilda this Saturday night under lights at ANZ Stadium. Our last two contests with the Saints have been decided by only one point, ham shirts, so this game is guaranteed to be a thriller,! Grab your tickets now at www.ticketek.com.au

Back role best for Berbakov

<br /> Back role best for Berbakov<br />

IT GOES without saying that its the forwards that receive the plaudits in any team sport.

And whether the attention they get is responsible for moulding their usually extrovert demeanours or whether that character needs to be present to begin with to be a successful forward is debatable.

When it comes to choosing which sector of the field that Sydney Swans assistant coach Peter Berbakov would prefer to work with hes in no doubt. In fact, he wouldnt swap his defensive coaching role for anything.

“Ive got the hard disciplined players that are easy to manage. So I dont have any problems in having to refer them to the sports psychologist as often as Johnny (Blakey) does with the forwards,,” Berbakov laughs.

The former Bomber doesnt deny that the stereotypical attributes of the modern-day forward are more the rule than the exception.

“Even if you look at other sports like soccer, they seem to be the same breed. I think to be a creative forward and do damage on the scoreboard you need to have a few of those eccentricities and flamboyancy. It goes with the position.”

Surely then there must be a downside to coaching a defensive group,, who each week must ready themselves for the job of stifling the most creative players in the league. Perhaps moodiness, or a nasty edge. Berbakov says not.

“Theres no down side. Theyre easy to manage. They enjoy the competitiveness of their positions. Its a tough role to play so youve got to be mentally very strong to come up each week. There are no easy forwards playing in the competition. They really have to be switched on because their career is decided on whether they win or lose against their direct opponent. Its a one-on-one contest.”

But then the Swans, who are known for the quality of their miserly defence, have more creativity than most defensive groups.

Marty Mattners arrival from Adelaide, coupled with the already attacking styles of Tadhg Kennelly and Nick Malceski has given the Swans defence a flair not always characteristic of AFL defensive structures.

Its no coincidence that the first game all three managed to play out together was the 82-point victory over Richmond in round 10 that Paul Roos hailed as the Swans most pleasing effort of the year.

The site of the three defenders running onto the field together certainly enthuses Berbakov.

“It was a real coup by Roosy to get him (Mattner) over. When you think about having the three of them in your backline,, its amazing.

“The opposition might try and tag Tadhg Kennelly out of a game or they might try and drag Marty Mattner back to the goal square but when there are three of them it becomes a dangerous defensive line and the opposition have to start worrying about our defenders as much as we worry about their forwards.”

But this attacking flair can only be launched in the presence of what Berbakov labels his more dour defenders. These are the players that certainly dont attract plaudits but set the platform for counter attacks for the sides dashing defenders.

“You need your dour defenders. You need you Lewis Roberts-Thomsons and your Leo Barry and Craig Bolton to be stopping players.

“But what weve really found this year is with having Marty and Lewis being able to take the key opposition forward, man utd new away shirt, Craig Boltons able to play on a small forward. So not a giant, pumas unam jacket, someone more his size.

“Hes able to run off and be a little bit more creative. Whereas last year without Lewis playing he really had to focus on their key centre half-forward which stopped his attacking side a little bit.”

Worsfold hoping to turn the tide on injuries

<br /> Worsfold hoping to turn the tide on injuries<br />

WEST Coast coach John Worsfold is hoping youngsters Mitch Brown and Sam Butler can turn the tide on the clubs injury riddled pre-season when they return to football tomorrow night.

The NAB Challenge fixture against Adelaide in Alice Springs will be Browns first match since suffering a serious knee injury in the 2008 pre-season.

While Butler, who managed just five games in 2008, should play around 70 per cent of the match as he attempts to put a series of groin problems behind him.

With Beau Waters (elbow) and Pat McGinnity (broken jaw) sidelined for up to 12 weeks Worsfold was looking to Brown to change the clubs fortunes.

“Our hopes are that he gets through and enjoys the hit out, and well go from there,” Worsfold said.

“Hes a young man with an exciting career ahead of him. This is just the next little step, coming back from a serious injury, to get him up and running.”

West Coast’s preliminary squad of 29 includes Adam Selwood,, Ash Hansen, Tyson Stenglein and Mark LeCras, who all missed the NAB Cup opener against Collingwood.

Exciting forward Josh Kennedy has also been named despite battling knee soreness after a collision with Andrew Embley during training last week.

Worsfold said he would take a cautious approach with the 21-year-old.

“We’re going to assess him this morning he’s tracked on really well,” Worsfold said.

“If you ask Josh, we’d be mad not to play him. He’s ready to go,, but we want to make sure.

“We’re not out to stress blokes out for this round. We want him 100 per cent fit for round one. If there’s any risk at all this week we won’t take it with him.”

Other Eagles ruled out of tomorrow night’s clash are Adam Hunter (shoulder),ac milan uniform 2011, Embley (knee),juve home, Brad Ebert (groin) and Matt Rosa (ankle).

Hunter arrived at the club on Thursday morning with scans of the shoulder he had surgery on last July.

Worsfold said his star swingman had not suffered a setback and may be available for next week’s Victorian bushfire fundraiser against Fremantle.

“We expect that he will be available to play next week,,” Worsfold said.

“But he’s had big shoulder surgery and it’s just one of those things, he’s going to have a sore shoulder for a fair while.

“It’s not a setback; it’s just an ongoing shoulder issue that he’s got.”

Two sights to behold

,rangers football live

<br /> Two sights to behold<br />

IT FASCINATES me that the two most sublime examples of football excellence in the 2008 finals series have come from Lance Franklin and Robert Harvey.

One legend sailing into the sunset, another eclipsing everything but the sun itself.

Franklin’s ability to recover after being beaten to the ball by his opponent, and Harvey’s pinpoint passes to fast-leading forwards, provide undisputed evidence that the game is as healthy a spectacle as it’s ever been.

To see Franklin’s direct opponents relax a little as they get a fist to the ball, denying him a mark, but be left watching with a full grandstand as he bounces back with panther-like agility and a breathtaking goal, is to witness a form of sporting immortality. A moment that will live forever.

Harvey, or at least his career, has almost lived forever. He is playing against and alongside players who werent even born when he made his senior debut for the Saints.

Passing to captain Nick Riewoldt in the final against Collingwood, Harvey’s precision would have won applause from the most esteemed surgeon, such was his scalpel-like accuracy.

At 37, in a competition where youth has never been more important, the old warhorse has adapted his style to extend his usefulness. It’s testament to his enduring worth that he remains the player most teammates would want to have the ball if they were providing a target.

Franklin, a shooting rather than falling star,, has invented his own version of the big-bang theory, apparently evolving from somewhere within his very own star constellation which no football fan or astronomer has ever seen before.

To witness a man his size moving so swiftly,, in the air and at ground level, is like watching a wildlife documentary of a rare species.

Harvey,, apparently no longer needing the opposition’s best tagger or, as shown recently, an opponent at all, continues to underline his silent assassin status by delivering glorious assists when it matters most.

The great Tony Lockett, who rates Harvey as the best player he’s played with or against, newyork red bulls, would know. The big man kicked 462 goals for the Sydney Swans, but he had 898 before he headed north. How many times did Harvey lace him up?

For Saints loyalists, it was an Australian sporting partnership to rival bowled Lillee, caught Marsh.

So far, Franklin’s partnership has been with the English language in particular the number of adjectives used to describe him.

Fellow Hawthorn forward Jarryd Roughead is the perfect foil for Franklin, with Buddy playing the flashy architect to Roughy’s hard-working labourer.

That’s not to question Franklin’s work ethic, as he is one of the most effective tacklers in the team.

Tackling and Robert Harvey are like chalk and cheese. He applies his fair share, but will be remembered as the most difficult, if not impossible, player to pin.

The Harvey evasive shimmy ranks alongside Wayne Carey’s courageous marking with the flight of the ball as one of the most distinguishing features of the modern game.

While Franklin’s distinguishing features are so numerous, it’s frightening to forecast how a career still in its infancy will unfold.

Not since 1984, when Essendon’s Paul Salmon kicked 63 goals in the first 12 games of his second season before a year-ending knee injury in round 13 has such a blistering assault captured the imagination of footy fans.

Buddy’s Hawks meet Harvey’s Saints in Saturday night’s preliminary final.

A champion will hope to prolong his retirement for one more week, while a player well on his way to that status could just add some more magic.

The Four Points How not to announce a coach

<br /> The Four Points: How not to announce a coach<br />

1: Party pooper
Yes, we’re looking at
you Mark Williams. Did you really have to gazump Melbourne’s appointment of Dean Bailey as
coach by announcing it at your media conference on Friday? And then have your club put out a detailed media release on the subject. The poor old Dees
were forced to scramble to put out a one-line media release confirming Bailey
had got the gig and to make the formal announcement a few hours later, when they had planned a bells-and-whistles event early next week.

And spare a thought
for Mark Riley, the Melbourne
caretaker coach who was ready for a media conference farewelling Byron Pickett,,
Clint Bizzell and Nathan Brown when he was ambushed with questions about
Bailey’s appointment (and, therefore, his own failure to win the permanent
coaching position). Choco, by the way, will be announcing the winner of Australian Idol some time next week.

2: Party poopers
Yes, we’re looking at
you Adelaide.
There we were,, all set for a weekend of tension wondering who would make the
final eight and you went and spoiled it all by beating the Magpies at Telstra
Dome and settling the composition of the finals.

Fortunately this
season has been so close that there still may be a comprehensive shuffling of
the pack at the top of the ladder, with only Geelong, as of early Saturday, guaranteed to
stay in the place it sat in at the beginning of the round.

3: C1 and C2
That’s Caretaker 1 and
Caretaker 2. Oh,, how the fates have treated Brett Ratten and Mark Riley since
they took over their respective sides just a few weeks ago. Ratten has lost
every match in which he’s been in charge of Carlton
and gets the full-time job; Riley wins a couple for the downtrodden Dees and misses out on the big position.

And Sunday sees the
battle of Carlton and Melbourne at the MCG – somewhat
appropriately, the last game of the 2007 home-and-away season given that they’re
tussling at the tail end of the ladder. The match is bound up with priority
picks and accusations that large military vehicles have been seen in the
vicinity, but in the end, there are four points at stake. And here at The Four
Points, we really care about the four points.

4: Where to for Sheeds?
As it stands, Kevin
Sheedy will be coaching his last game of AFL football at Subiaco on Saturday
afternoon when the Bombers take on West Coast. Overlooked for the Melbourne
coaching job – and Sheeds was another person put in an uncomfortable spot by
Mark Williams’ untimely comments – he’s come over typically philosophical and
talked at length about such issues as drug use, Australian society and the
Lucky Country.

But Sheedy may also
have offered a substantial hint as to his future when he said he “might come
over to Western Australia
and keep the Freo boys in line with Harvs”. Yes,man utd new shirt, we can see Sheeds over in Perth: popping down to Margaret River
for a spot of wine tasting, sussing out the local TABs and keeping an eye out
for Martians and seagulls,2011 manchester united shirt, as well as giving any naughty Fremantle boys a quick
clip over the ear if they misbehave.

WHAT’S COMING UP

Here’s what to look for
on afl.com.au this Saturday.

The finals countdown
Keep up to date with
the crucial matches that will shape the final make-up of the eight, West
Coast-Essendon and Port Adelaide-Fremantle. And while the Richmond-St Kilda and
Brisbane Lions-Geelong matches can’t influence the shape of the finals, there
is still pride and bragging rights up for grabs.

Blues join Peace Project

<br /> Blues join Peace Project<br />

Carlton players today joined forces to help promote World Peace Day on September 21st. Bret Thornton, real madrid retro shirt, Eddie Betts and Jordan Russell joined students from Mentone Girls Grammar at Melbourne’s Federation Square to create some of the 7,,000 peace cranes that will be installed throughout the Fracture Galleries – the glass casing surrounding the Federation Square Atrium.

The 7,,000 peace cranes will be installed at a launch on Sunday at Federation Square that will include a message from the Mayor of Hiroshima.

Fed Square Chief Executive Officer Kate Brennan said, “The installation will be launched at a public event on the anniversary of the dropping of the bomb over Hiroshima,, and the beginning of the tale of the 1001 Cranes.”
“The event will feature a choral performance of peace messages with a complementary sound scape to be played periodically throughout the exhibition.
Ms Brennan said that particularly today the ’1001 Cranes’ installation is a symbol for the search for peace today.
The origin of the paper crane symbolizing peace is from the story of Sadako Sasaki

Sadako was two years old when the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. While she suffered no immediate injury, the effects of her exposure caught up with her some ten years later and she fought a courageous battle with leukemia.

During her treatment she began to fold a thousand paper cranes so that her wish for good health would come true. She died before completing her task and her fellow students folded the remainder of the thousand cranes which were buried with her. Each year children and adults from all over the world fold a thousand paper cranes to be taken to the Children’s Monument in the Peace Perk in Hiroshima and are placed at the foot of the monument where the inscription reads:

‘This is our city. This is our prayer. Peace in the world.’

On World Peace Day,club america t shirt, September 21, the peace cranes will be donated to Children’s Cancer wards to decorate hospitals across Melbourne. The distribution will be supported by players from the Carlton Football Club.

The Carlton Football Club encourages all supporters to join the club in support of World Peace Day and the Peace Crane project.

Saints smash Port, stop rot

<br /> Saints smash Port, stop rot<br />

ST KILDA has returned to form in emphatic fashion, liverpool fc clothes, disposing of a lacklustre Port Adelaide by 94 points at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

After two losses and a draw in the past three weeks, the Saints reignited their charge to a top-four finish in no uncertain terms as they outclassed the visitors to win 23.13 (151) to 8.9 (57).

The Power desperately needed to put some scoreboard pressure on early if they were to pull off an upset, but their errant kicking quickly put paid to that notion.

Port opened the match with four straight behinds while the Saints registered five goals to set the tone for the afternoon.

The intensity and accountability of Port Adelaide under Matthew Primus was sadly lacking as St Kilda moved the ball inside 50 with apparent ease throughout the day.

Stephen Milne (four goals) and Adam Schneider (three) were an ever-present danger in attack, while skipper Nick Riewoldt continued his journey to peak fitness with four goals on a day when his side had 13 different goalkickers.

A 24-point quarter-time lead was built upon at each change as the Power offered little in the way of resistance.

Lenny Hayes (34 possessions), Leigh Montagna (30) and Clinton Jones (28) provided the midfield grunt with Jones efforts all the more impressive when his superb negating role on Danyle Pearce was taken into account.

Playing mostly as a loose man in defence,, Brendon Goddard marshalled the Saints back line with great poise on his way to 34 damaging possessions with Sam Fisher and Sam Gilbert providing excellent support.

St Kilda appeared to take the foot off the accelerator when Port kicked back-to-back goals for the first time late in the third quarter, but coach Ross Lyon was having none of that, with a 64-point three-quarter-time lead blowing out by the final siren.

On a desperately disappointing day that ensured the Power will be spectators come September, the visitors had few – if any – four-quarter contributors. Travis Boak and Kane Cornes finished with 24 and 25 touches respectively, while Troy Chaplin battled for 25 disposals in a besieged back line.

The only possible sour note for St Kilda was the sight of Michael Gardiner, with his right hamstring iced, watching most of the second half from the sidelines.

However, Lyon said after the game that the move was more precautionary than required, and expressed the hope that the big ruckman would be fit to take his place against North Melbourne next week.

The coach was delighted with the manner in which his team attacked the contest after an off few weeks.

“It was a good, positive display. I was confident wed come here and have an improved display, which was the aim,,” he said.

“We had a really meaningful week and really concentrated on ourselves and how we play footy.

“We thought we had a super week [on the track] and then it was a matter of coming here and putting it in practice against an opposition that I was really concerned about coming here [against].

“It looked more like the St Kilda football team weve come to know over the last year and a half.”

Primus, who is now four games into his audition for the top job on a permanent basis, admitted the team had suffered a serious setback.

“It was a lesson in how you have to consistently come up every week and play a certain style no matter if youre at home or away, or whether youre playing against a top-four team or a bottom-four team,” he said.

“Well learn some really good stuff out of this tomorrow, but that doesnt sit well. Well learn something out of it, but it was really unacceptable the way we were torn apart defensively by the Saints.

“They gave us a really good lesson in where were at.”
